Frequently Asked Questions about the Door County Folk Festival

Q: Where is the Door County Folk Festival held? (back to top)
A: The Door County Folk Festival is held in the towns of Sister Bay and Ephraim Wisconsin, in Northern Door County, in Northeastern Wisconsin.  Click here for a Festival Overview.  The Door Peninsula, mid-America's favorite vacation area, is located in north east Wisconsin between Green Bay and Lake Michigan.  Door County, often alluded to as "the Cape Cod" of the Midwest, has something for everyone: sandy beaches, rocky shores, scenic trails & vistas, state parks, art galleries, music & theater, water sports, golf, unique shopping opportunities and a large selection of restaurants, including one with "goats on the roof".  Click here for links to other Door County resources and activities.

Q: When is the Door County Folk Festival held? (back to top)
A: The Door County Folk Festival begins on the first Wednesday following the 4th of July (Independence Day).  It is held in the towns of Sister Bay, Ephraim and Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, in the Northern part of the Door Peninsula.  The 2008 dates are July 9-13, 2008!

Q: What kinds of activities does the Festival have? (back to top)
A: (1) The Festival offers a variety of activities including learning opportunities in Ethnic Folk Dance Workshops, Music Workshops, Singing Workshops, for both new and experienced dancers, musicians and singers, Specialty Dance Workshops and Contra/Square Dance workshops with live music.  (2) If you like to party, there are Parties in Sister Bay (every night) and in Ephraim (Friday and Saturday nights).  (3) There are Culture Sessions/Leader Discussion Forums, and Dance & Stress Relief sessions at lunchtime.  (4) Throughout the weekend there is a Silent Auction of donated ethnic or dance-related items to support the scholarship fund.  (5) There is a Group Dinner a at local popular restaurant, a traditional Door County Fish Boil Dinner in Sister Bay Park, followed by Dancing and Music in the Park and on the Village Pier.  (6) There are also free Children's Activities that include crafts, story telling, sing-alongs, creative games and dancing.

Q: Are_there_performances? (back to top)
A: While some people do come to "watch" the workshops or the parties, the primary interest of and focus of the participants is in active participation in the dance, music and singing workshops and in dance parties. In the first two years of the Festival (1980 and 1981), there were formal "sit-down" concerts. This activity was discontinued in 1982 with the change in format of the Festival. In 2003 and 2004 the festival offered a Saturday Night Music Concert at Ephraim Village Hall. The DCFF crowd seems to be more interested in active participation and the concert has been discontinued since 2005.

However on Friday, July 6, 2007, at Baileys Harbor Town Hall, the Balkan Cabaret Orchestra will present a Mini-Concert for the Baileys Harbor Senior Citizens Group. This event will be open to the public.

Q: What times are these activities? (back to top)
A: The complete Festival Schedule can be viewed on-line.  Click here for the Festival schedule.

Q: Are these activities for adults or children? (back to top)
A: There are plenty of activities for both adults and children.  While adults are the primary audience for festival dance activities, DCFF offers free  Children's Activities in Sister Bay Park.  NOTE: The DCFF Children's Activities are not a baby-sitting service.  Your children can be involved in these activities with your permission and consent and their willingness and ability to participate and interact with others

Q: Can non-dancers attend? (back to top)
A: There are at least two types of "non-dancers":
  1. For those "non-dancers" who do not feel that they know how to dance, but who would like to learn how or are willing to try, DCFF offers Ethnic Folk Dance workshops specifically designed for beginning level dancers.  The Contra/Square Dance and Beginning-Level Ethinc Dance workshops are also easily accessible for new dancers.  For the tmes and locations of these activites:  Click here for the Festival schedule.
  2. For those "non-dancers" who do not dance at all, Door County offers many other activities, including: sandy beaches, rocky shores, scenic hiking trails & vistas, bike trails, canoeing, sailing & boating, state parks, fishing, "pick your own" orchards, guided and self-guided scenic tours, museums, art galleries, music & theater, water sports, golf, unique shopping opportunities, an outdoor drive-in movie park, and a large selection of restaurants including one with "goats on the roof".  Quite often non-dancing spouses of registered dancers come along.  Listings of many of these "other things to do" can be found in the free guides that we feature on display at the Festival, including: The Door County Chamber's "GoGuide", "Door County Vacation Guide", "Resorter Reporter", "Door Voice" and "Peninsula Pulse".  You can also find links and contact information for many other activities on-line in the DCFF website at our "Door County Resource Links Page".

Q: What does it cost? (back to top)
A: There are a lot of events with different prices.  There is also a cost for lodging if you register directly thorough DCFF.  Click here for the event price schedule.   Click here for the lodging rate schedule.

Q: How do I register? (back to top)
A: You can register via email, snail mail, fax and telephone.  Click here for the registration form.

Q: How do I get there? (back to top)
A: The best way to get to Northern Door County is to drive.  Click here for directions.

Q: What if I need a ride? (back to top)
A: Participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the Festival.  Public Transportation will get you as close as Green Bay but from there you would have to hire a limousine or plane to get to the Sister Bay/Ephraim area (Click here for transportation company information).  Your best bet is to try to car pool with friends or acquaintances who are driving to the Festival.  While DCFF cannot guarantee anyone a ride, we will try to connect you with people in your area or people who may be passing through your area on their way to the Festival - info@dcff.net, (773)-463-2288.  It is your responsibility to follow up with these connections and to secure transportation.

Q: Where do I stay in the area? (back to top)
A: There are many motels, hotels, resorts, condos  and campgrounds in Door County.   You can book your lodging through DCFF (one stop shopping) or you can book your own lodging. Click here for information on lodging.

Q: Is there Camping in the area? (back to top)
A: DCFF has a working arrangement with the Aqualand Camp Resort.  The Festival reserves space in the group campsite area.  You can also book your own space in the individual campsite area.  There is also camping in Peninsula State Park and in other private campgrounds.   Click here information about camping at Aqualand.   Click here for information about camping in Peninsula State Park.

Q: Can the Campground acomodate RVs? (back to top)
A:  Most parks and campgrounds are able to accommodate RV "camping", but there are usually special rules for that.  You will need to contact the campgound operators for specific information about RV hookups, etc.  Street parking is tight in some commercial areas, however most towns and malls have have parking lots that can accommodate large RVs.   Click here information about camping at Aqualand.   Click here for information about camping in Peninsula State Park.

Q: Can I get lodging for 1 or 2 nites? (back to top)
A: We've tried to design the Festival so that participants could attend the Festival for as many or as few days as they are able.  As a convenience to participants, DCFF has reserved space at motels and campgrounds so that they can register for the Festival and book lodging in one transaction - i.e., "one stop shopping". There is no problem in staying only 1 or 2 nights if you plan to camp.  However, with Door County being a resort area, motel space during a weekend is usually at a premium and 1 or 2-night openings are rare.  Occasionally we have an opening in a motel for 1 or 2 nights, and then we can offer it with a package.  Contact us to see whether any 1 or 2 night packages are available: info@dcff.net, (773)-463-2288.  NOTE: The innkeepers have a lot more flexibility to offer 1 or 2-night stays so call them directly for information.  If you book your lodging directly with the innkeepers, then you can still purchase a weekend pass (and other event tickets) from DCFF for as many days as you will attend.  Other motel listings can be found at the following links: Door County Chamber of Commerce - (920)-743-4456, Sister Bay Tourist Information Center -  (920)-854-2812, Ephraim Visitor Information Center - (920)-854-4989, Baileys Harbor Touurist Information (920)-839-2366, 2392 County Road F, Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin  54202.

Q: Can I bring my pet? (back to top)
A: The motels in which we book lodging (Voyager, Bluffside, Coachlite, Trollhaugen, Anchors Aweigh, Open Hearth, Patio) do not allow pets.  The Campground that we book (Aqualand) does allow pets, but pets must be kept on leashes and may not be left unattended.

Through networking, we found three motels that have "pet friendly" policies.  However there is a more extensive list of such motels on the Door County Chamber of Commerce Website.  Policies vary and you'll have to check with the individual innkeeper on specifics.  Some innkeepers have a limited number of "pet friendly" rooms, and may exclude certain types of pets, or may have damage deposit requirements:

Q: Is it fun? (back to top)
A: In a word, YEP!  Or if you're from Minnesota, YOUBETCHA! Take a look at what several other "happy campers" have written about their experiences at DCFF. Click here to view a story about "Door County Folk Festival Participant Experiences".

Q: Are work scholarships available? (back to top)
A: Most definitely!  The Festival requires the equivalent of twelve (12) full-time scholarship workers. Scholarships are awarded on a first-come first-serve basis.  Full-time scholarship workers earn a minimum complimentary weekend pass (admission to all dance, music and singing events), housing (for the nights that they stay over) for the Festival and one ticket to Saturday's Fish Boil Dinner.  Partial and Special scholarship workers pay a portion of the fee for a weekend pass and/or housing per a mutually agreed upon amount of work.  We can be quite creative and flexible in our negotiations.  Work scholarships do not cover transportation costs to and from the festival or other meals and incidentals. Please send in a letter describing your need for a Scholarship and someone from the Work Scholarship Team will contact you.
